In the mid-1970's a number of Houghton locals decided to form a Tennis Club to provide recreational and competitive tennis opportunities for the residents of Houghton-on-the-Hill. With no funds to buy land or build courts, consultations were held with the Lawn Tennis Association, and an LTA-affiliated club was formed, playing for two years at nearby Evington Park. During this time strenuous efforts were made to raise funds, with some members putting themselves at financial risk through offering personal guarantees. With the help of grants the Club eventually managed to acquire the wherewithal to build two courts and approached the Field Association Committee of the day who agreed that the courts could be constructed on Houghton Field. In the years following its formation the Club established a solid base of members of all ages from ten year-olds upwards. For the first twenty-three years of its existence the Club managed with just two courts and eventually reached a plateau with regard to membership until, in 1999, the Committee decided that the time was right to lay a third court, complete with floodlighting. This objective was achieved in 2000, with the assistance of grants from various bodies and, shortly afterwards, floodlights were also installed on the original two courts. At the same time, the qualifying age for membership was reduced from ten to five years and the Club embarked on an extensive coaching programme for both adults and juniors, supervised by a professional tennis coach, qualified and licensed under the Lawn Tennis Association. To further promote the sport to younger players, the Club introduced Mini Tennis coaching in 2002, a move which proved to be very successful. In the period since then, the Club's membership has grown by more than 50%, to become the thriving Club it is today.
